1. “A rose can never be a sunflower, and a sunflower can never be a rose. All flowers are beautiful in their own way, and that’s like women too. I want to encourage women to embrace their own uniqueness.”
— Miranda Kerr, an Australian model who rose to fame as a Victoria’s Secret Angel.

2. “Don’t be into trends. Don’t make fashion own you, but you decide what you are, what you want to express by the way you dress and the way to live.” —Gianni Versace

3. “Take care of yourself, be healthy, and always believe you can be successful in anything you truly want.”
— Alessandra Ambrosio, a Brazilian model, and actress known for her work with Victoria’s Secret.

4. “I’m proud and humble to read that I inspire people because I have a scar and I work in the fashion industry. I want to help and let people know that beauty can be many things and there is beauty in imperfection.”
— Tobias Sorenson, a Danish model known for his ad campaigns for Zara, Diesel, D&G, and Antony Morato.

5. “If you believe in yourself and feel confident in yourself, you can do anything. I really believe that.”
— Karlie Kloss telling Seventeen magazine her advice to teens trying to break into the fashion industry.

6. “It’s something that I realized women do constantly and don’t even know that they’re doing it: They say these negative things about themselves that they would never say to someone else. I have friends who do it in front of their daughters, which is very detrimental because your daughter inherits your DNA and might look like you or be bigger than you. When she hears her mom say all these negative things about herself, in turn, it may make her think she’s saying them about her. This issue is one of those things that I really stand for.”
— Tyra Banks, on banning “fat talk” in the fashion industry.

7. “The secret to modeling is not being perfect. What one needs is a face that people can identify in a second. You have to be given what’s needed by nature, and what’s needed is to bring something new.”
― Karl Lagerfeld

8. “Modeling is the culmination of lighting, texture, body movement, and your soul’s expression.”
― Adrienne Posey

9. “It took a while to grow the confidence to say, ‘This is who I am, take it or leave it.”
― Coco Rocha

10. “It’s about being who you are. If people can’t accept it, too bad”
― Kylie Jenner

Practicing your most flattering poses and smiles is powerful in being more photogenic. Why?

  1. It increases your confidence by allowing you to conquer and improve
  2. Improves your ability to adapt while on set
  3. Allows you to know what exactly to do when working with photographers

If you want to know how to be more photogenic, you have to practice. How do you practice? Here are a few tips:

  1. Practice in front of a mirror so you can see live what your body is doing and how certain poses and smiles look/react.
  2. Use your phone and record video of you posing. This is a great way to learn not just what pose worked, but what you did to get the pose.
  3. Ask another model to guide and critique you. Sometimes it pays to just have a friend walk you through it.
  4. Get help with a photographer or modeling agency. Talent coaching is a great way to grow. If you can get real-world advice and experience at the same time.

Get out there and practice! Let us know what helps you to be more photogenic or what kind of tips you’d like to receive from SDS.

Modeling Tips to Be More Photogenic – Study Yourself

Over the next few posts, we will be exploring modeling tips to be more photogenic. Today’s post is about studying yourself.

Being able to know and use your body is a great superpower as a model. If you spend time studying other models, one thing you’ll notice is that successful models know how to use their own bodies properly. Experienced models know their strengths and weaknesses.

How do you study yourself?

The first way would be to study your own photos. Gather sets you look great in and ones you look not so good in. Determine what the differences are and what makes the great ones great. Perhaps it’s a certain kind of garment that is flattering, a special way of lighting, a pose, or even a certain angle. Take note of the things you do and don’t like, so you look great in photos.

Knowing your weaknesses upfront is also powerful. You’re able to talk about those weaknesses with the photographer is a keen skill. If the photographer knows upfront, they can help you improve on or mask your weaknesses.

Your ability to improve is your greatest strength as a model. Being able to improve starts with self-reflection.
